Greetings all! Please come and join us for our June 8th meeting. Our featured guest speaker will be Christine Main. She is coming to us from HRC where she has spent many years. Christine will be sharing with us her work at HRC and also some of the other organizations that she is involved with. She is a very dynamic speaker and it will be a treat for us all to hear this young lady speak. Huge hugs & kisses to my Kansas City connection. A big belated “thank you” to all who participated in my send off-be it with your E-mail wishes or your physical presence at my last meeting. You blessed me beyond words. We are getting settled in our new home (no it’s not all done yet)! The neighbors are super friendly, but things do move a bit more slowly here:) I miss you all and think of you OFTEN– can't want to get started down here in Texas. Jamie Dear PFLAG-KC Family, It is another pride month with so many possible opportunities for speaking and networking within the community. I hope that all of you will be able to visit the Kansas City Gay Pride Festival just west of the Liberty Memorial. It is always a fun opportunity to meet others within the GLBT community. Who knows, you might see someone there that you would not expect to ever see in that environment. It happens to me almost every year. We had a delicious potluck on Mother’s Day. Thanks to all who came early to set up the room and those that participated. We had several new folks in attendance. There are several companies that are planning pride activities within their workplaces. We have been invited to participate at Met Life, Citi, and Sprint. For your future planning, we have lined up a representative from HRC to speak to us in June and George Turner in July. We have several pending speakers for later in the year. If you have a specific idea for a speaker/program, feel free to contact any Board member. We will be discussing future programs at our next Board meeting, prior to the June general meeting. We are still in need of a Treasurer. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please contact Randy at 913-894-5748 for further information. Keep in mind that all Board positions are up for election in September. I look forward to seeing all of you on June 8! Randy Reflection: A Young lady did not want to wear a dress to her high school graduation this year. Being an out and proud Lesbian in that school (and in her life) she felt that if she could not wear the type of dress clothes she always wears ( a.k.a. nice slacks and/or a suit) she did not want to walk across the stage for her diploma. Upset about school policy, she went to a teacher that she loved and trusted and shared her problem. This teacher in turn wrote the principal and he changed the policy at Park Hill South High School. Starting in 2008 the dress code for young ladies has been changed to include a choice of wearing slacks if they so choose. So this particular young lady proudly walked across the stage that night in her grey slacks to receive her diploma. Later that same week , this same young lady lost her job do mostly to the fact that her boss was a homophobe. One step forward and two steps back. I guess that is why we do what we do. Something to think about.
