We know it’s sometimes difficult for a parent to accept that a child is gay or transgender. It can be unexpected. It can raise fears for a child’s safety and other feelings. We know because we’ve been there.
Education and support are essential elements on the path to understanding and acceptance. Our help line, one-to-one parent support, and chapter meetings are a wonderful way to meet other parents and LGBT people to get support and information.
Confidential Helpline
Toll-free help line: 816-765-9818
Trained parent and family volunteers are available to answer questions, listen, and provide resources. Our volunteers are parents with LGBT sons or daughters. They have offered to listen to and share their experience with other parents or family members. All calls are confidential and anonymous. Leave your name, phone number, and the best times to call; a PFLAG Kansas City support volunteer will call you back. The volunteer will not reveal the purpose of the call to anyone else who answers the phone.
One-to-One Parent Support
If you wish to speak more extensively over the phone or in person with one of our trained volunteers, we offer one-to-one parent support. We match your situation to that of one of our volunteers – a dad with a gay son can speak to another dad if he wishes. All meetings are confidential.
Support Groups
The PFLAG Kansas City chapter holds meetings that are support groups led by a facilitator, for parents of LGBT children and LGBT people. Group meetings take place on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month and are confidential.
