Kansas City chapters of PFLAG and GLSEN have joined to support young people in furthering their education. They have established scholarships for graduating high school students in the Greater Kansas City area who identify as LGBTQ+. The organizations will provide two $1000 scholarships for the post-secondary education (college, university, training, trade school) of two LGBTQ+ high school seniors in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area of Missouri and Kansas.
The application includes the completion of one essay, to be submitted by February 28, 2022, no later than 11:59 pm (CST). The scholarship recipients will be notified by early April 2022. The recipients of the scholarships will be invited to a public presentation of the scholarships at the Break the Silence even in Kansas City.
The scholarship application is open to any public or private high school student or homeschooled student graduating in the spring of 2022 and pursuing further education in the next academic year.
A committee of chapter volunteers of GLSEN and PFLAG will evaluate students’ applications on the depth of essays explaining hopes for the future, passion and enthusiasm, and the overall impact of descriptions of how students will advocate for positive change.
As students are preparing essays, they should keep the following in mind: The mission of GLSEN is to create safe schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, is dedicated to fostering a work environment and designing programs and resources that are inclusive and celebratory of diversity, and sensitive to the role of power and privilege in society. The mission of PFLAG is uniting people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) with families, friends, and allies. PFLAG is committed to advancing equality through its mission of support, education, and advocacy.
PFLAG and GLSEN are 501(c)3 organizations under the umbrella of PFLAG National/GLSEN National.
