PFLAG National, on behalf of our members in Missouri, became party to a lawsuit filed by Lambda Legal, the ACLU of Missouri, and Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP in Cole County Circuit Court to block the implementation of SB 49, which would prevent transgender adolescents in Missouri from accessing evidence-based gender-affirming medical care. PFLAG has hundreds of members in Missouri who are directly affected and harmed by this law, which is scheduled to take effect on August 28.Noe v Parson was filed to challenge SB 49 on behalf of PFLAG National, GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality, three families of transgender young people, and medical providers. This case is personal for me: I was born and raised in the Joplin area and know that the good-hearted people of my home state would never want to harm a child or take away a parent’s right to care for their family. Yet that’s what SB49 does by bringing the government into the doctor’s office to harm a vulnerable group of Missourians. PFLAG is suing the State of Missouri on behalf of our chapters and members in the state, representing hundreds of families of transgender youth and adults, to ensure every Missourian gets the medically necessary care they need, transgender or not.
Our team has put together a helpful FAQ to answer some of the questions we are hearing about this case. As a resident in the state of Missouri, you might have additional questions that aren’t addressed in our FAQ. If so, please reach out to us at [email protected].
Thank you for your continued support of transgender people and their families in Missouri, and of PFLAG. Together we will continue the work to ensure that everyone can access the healthcare they need—and that every LGBTQ+ person is safe, celebrated, empowered, and loved.
Sincerely,
Brian K. Bond (he/him)

“D.C. (they/them) is a Skadden Legal Fellow at the ACLU of Kansas, where they work as an attorney to enforce and expand the rights of LGBTQ+ Kansans. D.C. graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in 2021, where they were a dedicated LGBTQ+ rights advocate who co-founded a free gender marker and name change clinic for low-income trans folks, expanded gender neutral bathroom access on campus, and published legal scholarship on LGBTQ+ Kansans rights.”
This presentation will be applicable to parents in both Kansas and Missouri. A lot of the law that protects trans students in school is federal, which doesn’t change state to state.
